1. How to get to Kyaiktiyo

The city of Kyaiktiyo in Burma is located in the south of the country. Many means of transport will take you there.
By bus: From Yangon, the company “Win Express” holds the journey to Kinpun (the city at the foot of Mount Kyaiktiyo). The first bus departs from Yangon at 6:30 am, then a journey for every hour until 2.30 pm. The price of a ticket is 0.35USD, and the journey takes about 5 hours.
By train: From Yangon, trains leave towards Kyaiktiyo throughout the day, starting at 07:15. A first-class seat will cost you 0.1USD. You can buy the tickets directly at the station, but remember to take your passport with you. The journey takes about 4 hours, but delays are frequent.
To reach the Golden Rock, you must first reach Kinpun. From there, a truck will take you to the summit (2500 kyats or 0.11USD) or a part of the ascent (you will descend at the place which is 4km far from the summit, 1500 kyats or 0,07USD.)
In term of accommodation, you can find very affordable guesthouses in Kinpun. However, you will not be able to see sunrise or sunset at Mount Kyaiktiyo because the first truck gets there at 6:00 and the last leaves the summit at 18:00. For eating and drinking, the cheap traditional restaurants on the roadside in Kinpun can be a good choice. At the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo, both housing service and food are limited and relatively expensive (50USD per night or more for a room).

2. What to do in your trip to Kyaiktiyo?

On your trip to Kyaiktiyo, the main attraction is surely the Golden Rock. It is one of the most important religious sites in Myanmar. You will have to pay a tax of 6000 kyats, or 0.3USD to enter there.
The site includes a pagoda built next to an enormous mass of granite. The view is so majestic and surprising. A legend is told that the Golden Rock attach to the mountain thanks to the Buddha’s hair. Thousands of pilgrims over centuries have covered the Rock with gold leaves.
At the summit, you will be able to take a worship activity, donating a sheet of gold and put it on the rock. This is certainly a strong impression during your trip to Kyaitkiyo in Myanmar. However, only men have the right to approach the rock and touch it.
If the heart tells you, you will be able to carry out the pilgrimage to the Golden Rock. It will take you 4 to 5 hours to ascend and 3 hours to descend.

Focus on: The Festival of Lights at the Golden Rock (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda)

Each year, usually in December (base on the lunar calendar), the Festival of Light takes place on Mount Kyaiktiyo. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the New Year. Monks and pilgrims light 9999 candles.
